Nissan celebrates 50 years of performance

High performance will take center stage at the Nissan exhibit at the 2019 New York International Auto Show.

Including a celebration of the 50th anniversaries of the iconic Nissan GT-R and Z sports cars. “If you love performance vehicles, both modern state-of-the-art production cars and historic sports cars, this is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to see many iconic Nissan and Datsun vehicles in one place,” said José Valls, president and chairman, Nissan North America, Inc.

The 2020 Nissan GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition pays homage to Nissan’s performance heritage.

The most powerful production GT-R ever, the latest version of the exclusive GT-R NISMO is highlighted by new GT3 turbochargers for enhanced engine response and acceleration, improved transmission control for quicker cornering and escape, enhanced steering response and vehicle grip and new carbon ceramic brakes. Overall vehicle weight has been reduced through use of carbon fiber roof, hood and front fenders.

Which includes a unique exterior and interior treatments, including special seat embroidery and an Alcantara® headliner with unique stitching. Based on the 2020 GT-R Premium model, it also offers increased performance. Three exterior color options are offered, each with special 50th anniversary strips, badging and wheels. The interior features unique coloring and badging. It goes on sale at certified Nissan GT-R dealers in summer(US) 2019.

The 2020 Nissan GT-R 50th Anniversary Edition takes the nameplate to a level that was unimaginable when it was first introduced 50 years ago. To celebrate the half-century of the GT-R, engineers challenged themselves to find undiscovered performance potential while still making sure the car can be enjoyed by drivers at any level.

Nissan’s 3.8-liter V6 24-valve twin-turbocharged engine – each handcrafted by its own takumi technician – remains the heart of the GT-R’s drivetrain. The GT-R NISMO features an exclusive turbocharger design – direct from the GT-R GT3 race car – with a modified turbine shape and fewer blades. This optimizes the flow rate and enhances the acceleration response by 20%, without a loss of horsepower.
The car’s revised 6-speed dual-clutch transmission features a refined “R mode” that not only shifts faster but also optimizes gear selection, especially when exiting corners. This enhances the feeling of acceleration and deceleration on both road and track. The adaptive shift control has also been programmed to adapt shift schedules to the user’s driving style. This makes it possible to drive in a law-abiding way on public roads and in a highly spirited fashion on a race track, without manually changing modes.
The car’s exhaust note is the product of a revised titanium exhaust with handcrafted burnished blue tips.

With special exterior and interior appearance enhancements. Based on the 370Z Coupe Sport grade, it is available in a choice of two exterior two-tone color options – white/red or silver/black. Each combination includes special BRE-style accent stripes, side market decals and 50th Anniversary rear badging and red wheel accent stripes. Inside, the leather and synthetic suede sport seats are highlighted with 50th Anniversary seatback embossing and red accents. It is available with manual or automatic transmissions and goes on sale this month.

Nissan’s famed 3.7-liter V-6 engine is at the heart of the 370Z 50th Anniversary Edition. The engine produces 332 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. The innovative VVEL system optimizes intake valve open/close movements, allowing air to be sent promptly to the combustion chamber at the precise time it’s needed.Since the VVEL system can adjust to open the valves slightly, it improves fuel efficiency by reducing camshaft friction and fuel waste. It also provides cleaner emissions by allowing quicker warmup of the catalyst and by stabilizing combustion when the engine is cool.

The 50th Anniversary model comes equipped with a close-ratio, 6-speed manual gearbox that features a synchronized downshift rev-matching system called SynchroRev Match®. It automatically controls and adjusts engine speed when shifting to the exact speed of the next gear position, essentially “blipping” the throttle to smooth out any up/down shifts. This allows drivers of any skill level to change gears like a professional race car driver.

The 370Z 50th Anniversary Edition is also available as a 7-speed automatic with Downshift Rev Matching, paddle shifters and adaptive shift control designed to offer quick, manual-like shifting when operated in manual mode, with a target time of 0.5 seconds between shifts.
