GLOW WORM TUNNEL – LITHGOW

Lithgow is a small city just 30 minutes away from Blackheath or if you don’t know where that is, lets just say Blue Mountains. Lithgow is a nice quiet town with history and a great place to go for a nice drive up on a weekend. But if you drive another hour past Lithgow and through the Newnes State forest you will end up at a place called the Glow Worm Tunnel.

It’s an old rail tunnel about 400 metres in length. It was originally constructed as part of the railway line to transport minerals but it has now been dismantled around the 1940s. If you guys are planning to do this hike I would recommend some good hiking shoes (waterproof) and a torch, it gets pretty dark in there.

The drive there was definitely an eye opener, I expected a rainforest but instead I got this wasteland.

For kilometres all we saw was cut down trees and the roads were so rocky we were worried we would bust a tyre.

A barren wasteland, it was very depressing to see.

We took a pitstop and climbed some rocks.

Was heaps fun!

We then came across this tunnel which apparently use to be part of the railway line and it was pretty much the only way in. Just image if another car was coming in from the other side. Would of been a pain reversing back.

Luckily there were no cars.

We eventually got to the end of the road and our hiking started.

We came across some pretty cool things.

If you see a bridge like this then that means you’re going the right way.

There were also signs as well which helped us along the way.

There were some off trails but we didn’t go through. If you’re feeling adventurous then just do it.

At the end of the tunnel the path continues so we followed it as far as we could.

We followed the river that use to be the railway line.

But we kept moving.

We walked as far as we could and saw some pretty cool stuff but we decided to call it a day since it was getting dark. All in all, it was definitely a good adventure with a nice drive. I would recommend getting a 4WD if you have one as you will be experiencing alot of bumps and potholes during your journeys.
