Umpherston Sinkhole & Blue Lake

It’s often too easy to forget that we’ve got some pretty cool sights in our own backyard.

Nestled almost right in the city of Mount Gambier, is a sinkhole, once but an ordinary limestone cave, and now an oasis known as Umpherston Sinkhole.

Named after James Umpherston, who was the first to begin planting a garden in the sunken piece of earth.

Now a tourist attraction that can be visited freely, day and night, complete with BBQ’s for an interesting lunch adventure, or possum tours by night.

That’s not all Mount Gambier has to offer though, head a couple minutes south west from the sinkole and you’ll find Blue Lake, a lake formed by a volacanic crater that becomes a vibrant blue between December to March. We were there during June, so missed it’s full potential.

Coming soon, read about our stay(voluntarily) at the Old Mount Gambier Gaol.
